Trevor John Ferrier was born into a family of Scottish origin.

 

At age 11, he began to study with the Scottish master snare drummer, John Blair Kerr. Having become a specialist in this field, he earned the North American Solo Drumming Championship in three consecutive years.

In 1978, Trevor formed the Celtic music group Rare Air, with two bagpipers and the guitarist, Richard Murai. During the next eleven years, Rare Air recorded five albums and performed concerts and festivals throughout North America and Europe. In 1989, he discovered African percussion and the sanza with Cameroonian musician Njacko Backo. With Njacko, he played in the group, Kalimba Kalimba, with whom he recorded five albums.

In 2004, Trevor met Sadio Sissokho, a kora player and percussionist from the Senegal. With Sadio, Trevor began the group, Mafrica.

In 2009, Trevor met the master balafonist, Naby Camara. His studies in balafon music inspired him to rethink the sanza and, in collaboration with instrument maker Stephen Woloshyn, he invented a sanza that used the melodic design of the kora. With this new instrument in place, Trevor began the collaboration with Sadio that led to the creation of Sanza Percussions et Sadio Sissokho.

Trevor and Sadio created Sanza Percussions and Sadio Sissokho to explore the melodic tradition of West African music.

In 2011, Trevor was able to work with a second sanza player, François Séguin. They created a polyphonic style, rich in harmonies and counter-melodies and, with the addition of Julie-Anne Ricard in 2014, they could use the percussion of the calabash and cajon to drive the rhythmic energy of this ancient music.

In 2016, Sanza Percussions and Sadio Sissokho released "Kora Sanza Fusion", an album of eleven

songs recorded by Emmanuel Lavigne of Valmedia. The band has performed at the Nuits d'Afrique Festival as well as at the Club Balattou and at the Monument National.

In 2017, the group released two videos- « Un récapitulatif du spectacle à la Maison de la culture Villebon de Beloeil » and « Sadio Sissokho chante Miniyamba ».

In 2017, the band began their collaboration with jazz saxophonist Bryan Highbloom, who also plays sanza. In 2018, Sanza Percussions and Sadio Sissokho released the first video of this collaboration- « Live Studio Session » with Bryan Highbloom on sax soprano @ Coop des Musiciens- "Le Symphonique".

In the fall of 2018, Sanza Percussions and Sadio Sissokho was selected to participate in the 8th edition of MUZ la Vitrine des musiques métissées, presented by Vision Diversité.
